NTS Commissioner
Holds Meetings with IRS Commissioner

National Tax Service Commissioner
Ju-sung Lee met with US Internal Revenue Service Commissioner Mark Everson on
Thursday,
March 23, 2006
.
The meeting, held in the Washington, DC headquarters of the IRS, marks the first
bilateral meeting between the two countries’ heads of revenue.

At the meeting, the two Commissioners
discussed
and shared experiences and ideas

on such topics as balancing investigation with service, innovating the organizational
structure of the tax office, and future bilateral and multilateral relationships.

Afterwards, Lee was briefed
by relevant senior IRS officials on matters of NTS interest including large
corporate audit and legal interpretation. The topic that drew the greatest attention
among Lee and accompanying NTS officials was the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC),
as a tax credit of a similar nature is slated to be implemented in Korea in
the near future. The EITC presentation was followed up by a visit to one of
the front-line IRS tax offices so that the group could gain firsthand insight
into how the system of earned income credits is actually administered.

Much satisfied with the outcome
of the meeting, Lee and Everson agreed to continue discussions on matters of
common interest during the upcoming Forum on Tax Administration in Seoul scheduled
for later this year in September.
