Tax
Evasion Reporting Hotline

The
National Tax Service launched the Tax Evasion Reporting Hotline on January 1,
2007 with the aim of establishing a civil watchdog system that monitors tax
evasions and creating a culture of compliance. Those wishing to report suspicious
activities in connection with tax evasion can phone in by dialing 1577-0330
from anywhere in the nation, 24-hours a day, through either landline or mobile.
The call is automatically switched to the caller’s nearest Regional Tax Office.

The
NTS is seeking citizen reports on various activities of tax evasion including
business owner’s refusing to accept credit cards or issue Cash Receipts, tax
evasion related to speculative real-estate investment, exchange of false tax
invoices, sale of fake whiskey, and a tax debtor’s attempt to conceal property.

Since
the national hotline was installed, between January to April 2007, the NTS received
855 calls reporting of suspicious activities and 4,428 requests for tax fraud-related
consultations. This is over a fivefold increase in the number of reports compared
to the same period last year.

Up
to KRW 100 million in rewards is given to individuals providing compelling evidence
or leads to a tax evasion or reporting of property kept hidden by tax evaders.
